The rise of graphics-rich, interactive embedded applications—such as digital signage, gaming, retail POS, transaction and educational terminals—is fueling demand for high-performance, energy-efficient embedded systems. These systems must behave much like a typical embedded platform while delivering features often expected from a rich desktop system. The full complement of requirements includes: high compute power, wireless connectivity, energy-efficient operation, rich graphics, remote manageability and a fanless design.
New low-power, high-performance Intel® architecture processors and chipsets—such as the Intel® Atom™ processor and Mobile Intel® 945GSE Express Chipset—are ideal for use in such "enhanced thin client" platforms. Intel is collaborating with members of the Intel® Embedded and Communications Alliance to design platforms for these environments that can run highly interactive and visually compelling applications such as dual-independent display, touch-screen operation, high-definition audio and graphics.
Developers of thin clients need platforms that scale in performance and features to meet a broad variety of application requirements. The embedded nature of these
solutions means they must also enjoy long life support and a robust complement of third-party hardware, firmware and software that can be cleverly constructed into highly engaging
applications, such as interactive displays.
Intel architecture provides all of the performance and features required for enhanced thin client solutions. And now the Intel® Atom™ microarchitecture delivers these qualities in a very low-power version of this widely established and popular computing architecture. With a combined TDP as low as five watts, platforms based on Intel Atom processors and their companion chipsets meet the unique design requirements for fanless enclosures, including signage and handheld devices.
OEMs that choose Intel architecture for their thin client solutions get the benefit of scalability and choice. Because all of Intel?s processors use Intel architecture at the core, developers can introduce multiple solutions from a single software development effort, varying the end product simply by changing the processor, chipset or other features of the hardware platform. Designers also have at the ready an extensive selection of application-ready hardware and software from Intel's large, global community of developers that can speed time to market and simplify the upgrade process, all at minimal cost.
