DCQCN Specification

DCQCN relies on Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) as defined in RFC 3168, which introduces a mechanism for signaling congestion without dropping packets.

ECN modifies the IP header's Type of Service (ToS) byte by splitting it into:

  • 6-bit DSCP field (used for QoS classification)
  • 2-bit ECN field (used for congestion signaling)

The ECN field values are interpreted as follows:

Binary Value Code Meaning
00 Non-ECT non ECN-capable transport
01 ECT(1) ECN-Capable Transport (variant 1)
10 ECT(0) ECN-Capable Transport (variant 0)
11 CE Congestion Experienced (marking)
