Create Windows Virtual Machine using Virtual Machine Manager Running on Ubuntu OS

If you intend to use an IDV server or build a server that operates on Ubuntu OS to create a custom Windows ISO Image for Windows IDV Guest with NTLite, follow the instructions below. The instructions below will provide steps to create a Windows Virtual machine running on an Ubuntu-operated system. This is required as NTLite Software runs on Windows-operated systems.

  1. Log on with sysadmin account.
  2. Download Windows 10 IoT Enterprise version 21H2 iso image. (While other versions of Windows 10 are not currently being validated, they may still work as well.)
  3. Launch Virtual Machine Manager in Ubuntu.
  4. Click the Create a new virtual machine icon.

  6. Click the Local install media radio button and click Forward. A New VM dialog box will pop up.

  8. Click Browse, and a Locate ISO media volume dialog pops up. Then click Browse Local.

  10. Now you should see the Locate ISO media dialog, navigate to the path of the downloaded Windows ISO file, and select the file, then click the Open button.

  12. Now, you are back to the New VM dialog. Uncheck the Automatically detect from installation media/source checkbox. At Choose the operating system you are installing text box, type in Microsoft Windows 10. Select Microsoft Windows 10 (win10) from the list, then click Forward.

  14. On the Choose Memory and CPU settings, set the higher memory and CPU for this VM. The recommended settings for Windows VM are 8192 MiB and 8 CPUs. Click Forward to proceed.

  16. Select Create a disk image for the virtual machine radio button and enter 80 GiB in the number box. Click Forward to proceed.

  18. Now, click Finish to begin Windows 10 installation. Follow the instructions on the operating system installer to complete the installation process.

  20. Once the Windows 10 installation is complete, download and install WinSCP on the Windows VM. WinSCP will be used later in the Create Customized Windows ISO Image for the IDV Guest using NTLite section.
  21. Launch WinSCP and create a new connection to transfer files between the Ubuntu host and the Windows VM. In the Host name textbox, enter the Ubuntu host’s IP address. Enter the host’s username and password in the Username and Password textbox, then click Login. Re-enter the password when prompted, then click OK to proceed.

  23. With the connection established, you can proceed to the next section, Create Customized Windows ISO Image for the IDV Guest using NTLite.
