Container layout
Windows are sized so that every window gets equal space in the container. It splits the windows horizontally (windows are right next to each other) or distributes them vertically (windows are on top of each other).
Stacking, $mod+s will display the focused window, and the rest will be at the top of the container.
Tabbed, $mod+w has the same principle as stacking, but the list of the windows at the top is only a single line.
In this diagram, the terminals on the left are in a stacking layout, and the terminals on the right are in a tabbed layout.
